Cozy Interior Ideas For Winter.

It's May and we are well on our way into the winter months here in South Africa. Although our winters are quite mild we still experience some really cold days, while mid- day in general can be warm the evenings and mornings are rather chilly.

South Africans tend to live for summer, sadly neglecting our homes during winter, the truth of the matter is winter is the season to enjoy cozy days at home with the fire place going, warm soups, home cooking, enjoying our homes and socializing indoors.

This is a great time to warm up and re-invent our living space, creating an atmosphere that makes home the go to place on cold evenings and week-ends.

Natural textures are seriously big at the moment and in my opinion are here to stay. Introducing wood paneling onto a feature wall brings in a natural earthy texture, warming up the room instantly, plant features silk or natural, whichever suites your lifestyle better, simply hanging off the wood is a great way to lift the mood as we miss the outdoors during the winter months.

When it come to new furniture purchases, I suggest have some fun and be adventurous, after all we only live once! there are some stunning new quirky, mid century modern pieces which bring life and fresh energy into a dull space.

Colour is the best medicine for a rather boring life and space! bring in some drama and spice-up your world with fun new colours like vibrant reds, deep blues, greens and pinks these colours are seriously current and can be a refreshing change, lifting the mood and encouraging conversation.

There is so much amazing art and photography around to choose from these days, quirky prints are a  great and effective way to change the atmosphere in the room, bringing in a new dimension, creating a focal point and modernizing the space.

These are some easy tips to energize your home for winter with some stunning pieces and ideas to take home. I will be talking more about winter ideas in the coming weeks, as I shop around for ideas and new stock...will keep you posted!

New Mainbed Project, Online How it Worked Out...

We really excited to be going ahead with this stunning new Main Bedroom project, our client is thrilled to get started having approved the designs.

So how did this work online...Good question? Well in this case our client needed building alterations done to the space which were a little complicated and could not be communicated clearly online.

No problem, we arranged a site visit which took 2hrs to measure, take the brief and give constructive design input and ideas. Site visits are charged at R920 per hour, over and above the design fees, they usually take no more than two hrs and are well worth it in such situations.

We then proceeded with the design and concept work, communicating online, putting together two concepts, plans and drawings for the BIC's. Our client finalized the designs via email and we made the necessary changes until they were totally happy with the final look and feel.

We then met at the fabric house and furniture outlets to finalize fabrics, wallpaper, finishes and furniture. Due to the fact that all designs were finalized and confirmed this took 2hrs at the most and proved to be an easy exercise, with very little of the usual confusion.

In conclusion, although the entire design process did not take place online... it proved to be lot quicker due to the fact that most of the work was done and finalized online, this eliminated too many site meetings wasting precious time, by the time we met to conclude the design with the real deal, the concept was firmly in place eliminating endless shopping trips and confusion due to the many choices and styles out there.

So I would say this proved to a be a stress free, successful exercise ...for both client and designer.

i would guess that most of us have problems with clutter...i love this book because if you just take 15min a day to organize your wont overwhelm you to the point of doing nothing!

Don't be an egg, it's Easter...

Well can you believe it, it's already Easter, a time to celebrate and reflect. Time goes so fast soon it will be Christmas! anyhow lets not rush.. In South Africa we are approaching Winter and Autumn is most definitely in the air. This is a time to look at our winter wardrobes and homely comforts, a time to start preparing our home's to take us into winter with a cozy new look.

At Simply Living we love the fresh butterfly wallpapers from The Designers Guild, bringing nature into the space in a fresh new way, metal, dark wood and deep blues, pinks and taupe's add to the drama and warmth of the season to come. Roses are big this year, bringing with them romance, red wine burning wood and fire.

Deep tones coupled with fresh accents is the mood this winter, gold, dark woods offset with fresh flowers, pastels, butterflies and roses. Hints of crystal and silver ....

But for now... we will enjoy the Easter celebrations!

to compliment the mood i just love this book cooking with flowers...

Introducing Biophilic Design into our New Office Project...

It's great to see that our clients are educating themselves and embracing biophilic design. This new office project we are working on is an exciting start to the year and has also been a great opportunity to introduce the concept of biophilic design into an otherwise depressing space.

With plant walls, water features, nature images, natural textures such as stone and wood we have connected the space to nature, uplifting the interiors and the energy of the building.

Splashes of colour, modern furniture pieces and wall finishes, open spaces and informal meeting areas give the interior a modern updated feel, encouraging movement, collaboration and productivity.

It's quite refreshing to work with clients who understand the concept of how colour, natural light  and nature has an effect on the health and productivity of their employees. This also shows us that employers are becoming interested in improving the office environment to encourage productivity and the general well being of their staff.

Don't let Valentine's day leave you feeling Blue.

Not being the greatest fan of Valentine's day myself for obvious reasons...the expectations, the pressure, putting the popular girls & boy's in the limelight, the ugly ducklings in the dumps!

Although I do think that in recent years people have become more sensitive, changing the perspective to sharing gifts and love with all...

Candlelit dinners for two, roses, chocolates and teddy bears clutching hearts is what come to mind as we approach the most   celebrated day of the year..the day of love...

Which can be a blue day rather than a red day for those who don't have their own true love or their lover has flown away...

The origins of Valentine's day is still shrouded in mystery, intrigue, romance and blood as the legend goes... St Valentine was the first to send the message..."From your Valentine" to his young lover before his execution. The sympathetic, heroic, romantic figure that brought the poetry and celebration of love into our world.

There is also the Catholic Imagination filtering in, bringing with it mystery, passion, opulence, faith, love and intent, as the St Valentine's feast was introduced in the month of February to replace the Pagan celebration Lupecalia which was a fertility festival...    love ruling out love.

However in was Pope Gelasius who finally declared the 14th of February St Valentine's day in memory of the Saint, as time went by the day became associated with passion and love, helping people to express their feelings and emotions. Not a bad thing after all.

So in view of the mystery, the romance and drama associated with the one day dedicated to love. I think we should embrace it by creating and sharing an atmosphere of love ...

biophilic design...partnering with nature

I have always been a fan of nature filtering into design and space, however as a designer you still tend to get caught up with beautiful synthetic pieces, which is all fine! except we tend to forget about the wealth that nature has to offer and how much we crave her in this world driven by urban technology.

Designing spaces is more than just creating that happy place. Vibrant, natural, well environments and buildings are becoming an essential part of the design process today.Well hello! the planet was created with water, plants, animals, textures and light that resonate with our inner-beings.All this was meant for our well-being and enjoyment, yet we dismiss it by creating cold, dull, fake environments that make us sick.

2018 is the year of new beginnings... I do believe this year we will see a bigger drive towards biophilic design being implemented in our homes and work spaces.Biophilic design meaning: love of nature,is based on real science where more and more studies have revealed that an environment devoid of nature can have a negative effect our health, productivity and well-being Now one potted plant in the corner of the living room is not going to do the trick. Its about natural light, vegetation, plant walls, natural textures and materials, nature views, water and animals.

As humans we have a deep need and love for nature, our productivity and security depends on positive interactions with our space. In view of this it should seem natural to start introducing the natural world back into our world!

In the Mood for 2018

Think of 1000 orange balloons floating up across a pale blue sky, as misty pinks and corals rise softly above the horizon embracing the warmth of yet another summer evening, framed by one million shades of green holding clusters of yellow, lilac and plum flowers bouncing gently to the breeze...

Think of the circus re-invented, cartwheels, cows jumping over old grey logs, sleek black dogs running on a crowded that never ends...indulgence and dark chocolate..

life, optimism, new aspirations, fresh beginnings, wisdom, an open doorway leading to light, peace and hope...

This is the mood for 2018..In decor and fashion we see pearls, matte metals, silver and gold forming fresh new combinations, giving us hints of innocence, beauty and purity, new life, playful, lively sophisticated fun with touches of sparkling glamour and glitz...

Having shades of yellow and orange making a major comeback, bringing with them sunshine, clarity and enlightenment, infusing spaces and atmospheres with their laughter and warmth.

Ash stained and reclaimed woods, bold graphics, geometric patterns supported by simple modern lines will take the center stage this year ensuring stability, structure and confidence...

Moodier palettes also seem to be emerging with tangerines and corals, millennial pinks coupled with deep berries, dramatic blues, greens and gold...restoring the idea of traditional romance, love and religion.Chocolate box roses, beautiful big florals,Catholic imagination and castles.old ideas presented in a fresh new way....
